MARUF (MARMARA URBAN FORUM) ORGANIZED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY MARMARA UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES WAS HELD on 1-3 OCTOBER, 2019 in ISTANBUL!

Union of Marmara Municipalities aims to establish an urban forum that will help Istanbul to be a global brand in urbanization by organizing an international bi-anual Marmara Urban Forum (MARUF) in Turkey. MARUF, which was held for the first time at the Istanbul Congress Center on 1-3 October 2019, brought together all the stakeholders that played an important role in the design, transformation and management of cities, enabling different approaches to urban services and city management to be evaluated together. The forum was supported by 60 partners and 250 speakers and 5440 participants from 25 countries shared their knowledge and experience in 50 different sessions.

Guided by the Sustainable Development Goals, and curated with the theme of "Cities Developing Solutions" by MARUF; MARUF aims analyzing economic, political, social and ecological impacts of urbanization on humans’ lives and cities in collaboration with all stakeholders at local, regional, national and international levels; developing information flow and networks among cities and city-regions; Raising awareness on safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable urbanization approaches; Contributing to the transformation of cities to make them more liveable and equitable;Discussing how to strengthen the role of cities and local governments in case of emergency situations and human mobility related problems through finding alternative ways for discussing urban issues to contribute to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

In its first year, MARUF presented a detailed overview of the world of cities with a broad perspective of 12 themes: Environment and Climate Change, Urban Technologies and Innovation, Transport and Mobility, Urban Infrastructure, Housing and Built, Environment, Migration, City Networks, Local Development, Social Inclusion , Durability, Public Space, Governance.

NOVUSENS Smart City Institute as one of MARUF's supporting business partners, Ms. Benli emphasized that it would not be possible to transform into Smart Cities without having a prioritized focus at first on Smart Governance in her speech in the panel of MARUF with the subject of "Improving the Quality of Life in Smart Cities ". Stating that they dream the future of cities as sustainable and livable, she has stated that we should have a transparent, inclusive and collaborative approach in order to improve the quality of our lives.
